TEACHERS TRAINING PROGRAMME
As the scheme of Vocational Education is designed to provide skill and competencies to the students, the teachers need regular training in subject updating, educational technology, teaching methods and management aspects. A three-day workshop will be conducted during August 2004 for the preparation of a training module which includes the training schedule for all teaching staff during 2004-2005.
VOCATIONAL SURVEY
An in-depth study will be conducted to assess the present situation of the scheme of Vocational Higher Secondary Education in the state. The study will cover areas like employment potential of courses, emerging occupations for introducing novel courses, shortage of manpower, avenues for self employment, scope for development of Vocational Higher Secondary Education and higher education prospects.
ON THE JOB TRAINING
Collaborative arrangement between schools and industries is the new strategy for Vocational Higher Secondary Education programme in Kerala which is proposed to be introduced during the academic year 2004-2005. The theoretical aspect or mental skill is covered under in school programme but practical aspect or manual skill is developed by on-the-job training. Howsoever competent and capable a person may be, he cannot do his best at his job unless he is systematically trained in the particular industry. With this objective, it has been decided to implement one-month compulsory On-the-job-training to Vocational Higher Secondary Education students for exposing them to the real job situation.
TEXT BOOK DEVELOPMENT
There are no prescribed textbooks for vocational courses for the students to follow in Vocational Higher Secondary Education. Textbooks for all vocational subjects will be prepared and supplied to the students during 2004-2005.
MODEL SCHOOLS
As a part of qualitative improvement of Vocational Education, it is proposed to identify and upgrade one school per District as model Vocational Higher Secondary School. These schools will have good academic background and show excellence in basic infrastructure facilities, teaching faculty and Co-curricular activities.
ACADEMIC CORE GROUP FORMATION
In order assist the Directorate on academic matters with expert opinion and other services, an academic core group was formed with expert academicians from all vocational areas.
REMEDIAL COACHING CENTERS
It is proposed to introduce remedial coaching centers for subjects like English and Mathematics in selected schools of the state. A minimum of 10 students from each school with below average performance will be included in the Remedial Coaching Scheme. The coaching schedule will be five hours per week. For better administration of the centers, seven centers will be identified in each district and a total of 98 centers will be established all over Kerala.
CAREER GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING CENTERS
The main objective of the scheme of Vocational Higher Secondary Education is to prepare students for identified occupations for seeking self-employment or wage employment. For proper guidance for channeling students to take up suitable career and for emotional and psychological counseling of the Higher Secondary School students, career guidance and counseling centres will be established in three districts of the state.
AWARENESS PROGRAMMES
Vocational Education is a specialized stream of Education which provide an array of opportunities to its students both for employment and higher studies. But the student community is less aware of the benefits of the scheme. Hence it is proposed to launch an awareness programme on VHSE through media with the help of State Institute of Education Technology so as to popularize the courses among the students of Kerala.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)
National Service Scheme activities are being implemented in the Department with a new vision and mission. The NSS units, functioning in 230 VHS Schools have been organizing innovating programmes with the prime motive of developing personality of students through community services. The allotted volunteer strength comes to 22700. NSS Cell Directorate of VHSE has been organizing an array of programmes including leadership training, life style education, counseling, environment protection and nature conservation, water resources conservation and management, science awareness, Reading habit, HIV/AIDS awareness, legal literacy, First AID, Traffic Rules, Disaster Management, Human Rights, Panchayat Raj etc.
